The Centre for Health Psychology is one of the new autonomous Centres of the University. This is the first ever Centre in the country. The Centre was launched in the year 2007.
Health Psychology is a field evolving and developing as one of the main areas of applied psychology. It uses psychological principles to promote health and to prevent illness. It considers the biological, cognitive, behavioral, emotional, social and environmental factors as they relate to health, illness and health care.
One of the impacts of globalization is enhanced stress levels across all age groups and social class. Psychosomatic disorders and chronic illnesses are some of the manifestations of stress. Health needs to have a holistic approach which calls for integrated efforts of professionals from different fields. The role of Health Psychologists assumes great significance in this context.
University of Hyderabad is the first University in the country to start an autonomous unit called Centre for Health Psychology. The Centre for Health Psychology offers specialized courses in Psychology.
