Programmes of Study

1. M.Sc. Biotechnology: This course was introduced in the year 1990 under the Nation wide post graduate program by the Department of Biotechnology, Govt of India.

This course is a four semester program with credit system of evaluation. The courses offered by the department during the four semesters are: Semester 1: Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Analytical Techniques, Microbiology and Industrial applications, Genetics; Semester 2: Cell and Development Biology, Genetic engineering, Immunology, Biostatistics and Computer Applications, Bioporcess engineering and technology; Semester 3: Proteomics and Genomics; Immuno technology, Molecular Virology, IPR and Biosafety, 2 electives to be chosen by the students; Semester 4: Bioentrepreneurship and Communication skills. Electives as per the DBT revised curriculum will be offered to the students. In addition to the above the students are allowed to choose optional courses of their interest offered by the different Departments as well as other Schools in the third semester. Students undertake one year project work (part of third and complete fourth semesters) in one of the areas of the research in the Department.

Industrial visits: Students will be visiting biotech industries to learn various aspects of product development.

2. M.Tech Bioinformatics: (Sponsored by the UGC under Innovative program and approved by AICTE): M.Tech Bioinformatics is a state-of-the-art course, designed to train students in theory and techniques in genomics, proteomics, and computer aided modeling and drug design including hands-on practice using statistical packages such as R-package and SAS. The first batch of students has obtained attractive placements from reputed software and bioinformatics companies. The course is offered jointly by three Schools of the University viz., the School of Life Sciences, School of Chemistry, School of Mathematics & Computer Information Sciences, School of Physics and the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD), Hyderabad.

The Course structure includes Computational Techniques, Proteomics, Basic Statistics, Basic Mathematics and Introduction to Molecular Modeling in the First semester; Genomics, Databases, Bioinformatics, Introduction to Molecular Mechanics in Second semester, Drug Design and Advanced Bioinformatics in the third semester. Students are encouraged to choose one elective course in second and third semesters from other Schools. The students will carry out a project work during 3rd & 4th semesters under the guidance of a faculty member either at University of Hyderabad or CDFD.

The programme also offers remedial courses in the first semester to bring all the new students, who may not have sufficient experience with computers or biology, to a common level.

3. Integrated M.Sc./Ph.D Biotechnology: This is a five year integrated course with option of exit by the student with M.Sc. Biotechnology at the end of 2nd year.

This course is a ten semester program with credit system of evaluation. The students will be doing a course work during first fours semesters and carryout research work from fifth to tenth semester. The courses offered by the department during the first four semesters are: Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Analytical Techniques, Microbiology and Industrial applications, Genetics in the first semester; Cell and Development Biology, Genetic engineering, Immunology, Biostatistics and Computer Applications, Bioporcess engineering and technology in the second smestert; Proteomics and Genomics; Immuno technology, Molecular Virology, IPR and Biosafety, Research methodology, Scientific writing, Laboratory training in third semester, 2 electives to be chosen by the students; Bioentrepreneurship and Communication skills in fourth semester. Electives will be offered to the students in third semester. In addition to the above the students are allowed to choose optional courses of their interest offered by the different Departments as well as other Schools in the third semester. Students undertake thesis work (part of third and from fourth to tenth) under the supervision of a faculty member in the Department. Their research progress will be periodically advised by the doctoral committee. They actively participate in Journal clubs, research work presentation and submit monthly progress report of the research work. The research students have to present their research work in a comprehensive seminar before submission of the thesis.

4. Ph.D Biotechnology: The students carry out their work under the supervision of the faculty member and are periodically advised by the doctoral committee. They actively participate in Journal clubs, research work presentation and submit monthly progress report of the research work. The research students have to present their research work in a comprehensive seminar before submission of the thesis.
