Programmes of Study

M.Sc. Biochemistry: The course is a four semester programme that is evaluated based on credit system. A total of 12 core courses, four elective courses, four practical courses and a project have to be completed successfully by the students in the four semesters.

The core courses offered by the department during the four semesters are: Intermediary Metabolism-1, Biophysical Chemistry, Computer Applications in Biology, Genetics (I semester), Intermediary Metabolism II, Enzymology, Molecular Biology I, structural biology (II Semester), Basic Immunology, Molecular Biology II, Bioenergetics and Biomembranes (III Semester), Nutritional and Clinical Biochemistry (IV Semester). In addition, the Department also offers elective courses such as Endocrine biochemistry, Biostatistics, Neurochemistry, Molecular virology, Genomics and Proteomics (III semester) and Immunochemistry, Protein Phosphorylation and Signal transduction, Microbiology, Genetic disorders, Protein-DNA interactions (IV Semester). In the first three semesters the students have a lab course on Biochemical techniques and in the fourth semester they undertake a project work under the supervision of a faculty member.

M.Tech Medical Biotechnology: The main emphasis of the course is to impart advanced training to students with Postgraduate qualification in Biochemistry, Biotechnology and Chemistry as well as to Graduates in Medicine, Pharmacy and Biomedical Engineering / Biotechnology to acquire requisite skills for the development of novel diagnostic methodologies using molecular biological and immunological tools. The course is a 4 semester programme consisting of core and elective courses in I, II and III semesters. The student will carry out an application-oriented project supplemented by seminars during the III and IV semesters.

The core courses during I, II and III semesters are: Genetic and metabolic diseases, Nucleic acid technology, Cancer and infectious diseases, Protein technology, Cell culture technology and Molecular diagnostics. Some of the electives offered are: Biomedical instrumentation, Immunotechnology, In vitro drug screening, Pre-clinical toxicology etc.

Candidates having GATE qualification are eligible for a scholarship subject to the approval and sanction by the AICTE/UGC.

Ph.D Biochemistry : The students carry out their work under the supervision of a faculty member and are periodically advised by the doctoral committee. They actively participate in journal clubs, research work seminars and submit monthly progress reports of research work. The scholar presents the research work in a comprehensive seminar before the submission of the thesis.
