The Department aims to train people who are oriented towards research and teaching in advanced areas of Mathematics and Statistics. Special attention is given to foundational topics.

The Department offers research facilities in the following areas:

• Algebra, Analysis (Complex Analysis, Functional Analysis, Global Analysis), Algebraic Geometry, Topology, Algebraic Number Theory, Dynamical Systems.
• Fluid Mechanics.
• Statistical Inference, Outliers, Regression Diagnostics, Order Statistics, Reliability, Operations Research

Faculty Awards:

• Prof. V. Suresh of Dept. of Mathematics & Statistics has been chosen by CSIR for the award of "Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology" in Mathematical Sciences for the year 2009. Prof. Suresh is the first one to have been chosen for this honour from the School of MCIS
• Dr. K. Sudeesh of Dept. of Mathematics & Statistics has won Jan Tinbergen Competition for Young Statisticians for the year 2009 award given by International Statistical Institute (Netherlands)
